Government backs down and allows NI women free NHS abortions

Following the Supreme Court case of A and B v Secretary of State for Health [2017] UKSC 41 the Government has agreed that women from Northern Ireland will no longer have to pay for abortion services in England. Janet Farrell acted for Humanists UK (formerly British Humanist Association) who intervened in the case.

Stella Creasy MP tabled an amendment calling for women from Northern Ireland to be able to access free abortion services on the same footing as women resident in England and Wales. The amendment gained wide cross- party support. Justine Greening MP acting in her capacity as Minister for Women and Equalities said she shared “the concerns of many colleagues about the experience of women from Northern Ireland obtaining an abortion through the NHS in England.”
