Fiona O’Brien

Paralegal
Fiona
Fiona joined Bhatt Murphy in 2024 as a Paralegal.

Fiona is a part of our Immigration Detention and Migrant Rights Team, working on public law challenges and civil claims against the Home Office on behalf of individuals detained under immigration powers, as well as those affected by data breaches.

Before joining Bhatt Murphy, Fiona worked as an immigration paralegal, working on complex deportation appeals, asylum claims, and challenges to immigration detention. She has also volunteered with various organisations, including The Santé Project, which helps refugees access mental health and other essential services, and Circles UK, a community-based initiative that works to reduce sexual offending by supporting and managing individuals with harmful sexual behaviour.

Fiona has a strong interest in the intersection of surveillance, immigration control, and criminal justice. In 2022, she completed a Masters in Refugee and Forced Migration Studies at the University of Oxford, where her thesis critically examined the unlawful extraction of mobile phone data by UK Border Officers from individuals arriving via small boats. Her research explored the wider implications of mass data collection for algorithmic policing and border control.
