Bhatt Murphy instructed in The People vs Snoopers charter legal challenge

Bhatt Murphy solicitor Shamik Dutta has been instructed to represent Liberty in their challenge to the Investigatory Powers Act 2016, also known as the “Snooper’s Charter”.

The challenge is to various provisions within the Act which empower the State to gather and retain sensitive and private personal data in relation to each and every citizen in the UK concerning, amongst other things, health conditions, political opinions, personal relationships, people with whom they associate, sexuality, habits, daily routines and beliefs.

Shamik Dutta, representing Liberty, said:

“The Snoopers Charter has no place in a democracy; it turns law abiding citizens into suspects and opens up all our private lives to the prying eyes of individuals employed by the State. We have therefore issued legal proceedings and await the government’s response.”
