Jury finds serious failings following inquest into death of Caroline Hunt

On 25 May 2017 the inquest into Caroline Hunt, a prisoner at HMP Foston Hall concluded. The jury found many serious failings by prison staff, and these in part contributed to her self-inflicted death.

Caroline was found hanging on 25 September 2015 in a cell at HMP Foston Hall, and died in hospital on 29 September 2015. The senior officer on duty in the prison was immediately suspended for his actions, and during the inquest on 19 May 2017, HM Coroner recorded his “grave concerns” about another prison officer, resulting in her immediate suspension from operational duties to undertake urgent training.

Jane Ryan of Bhatt Murphy and Alison Gerry of Doughty Street Chambers act for Caroline’s daughter.
