Lords Vote to End Immigration Detention of Pregnant Women

On 12 April 2016 the House of Lords voted to end the immigration detention of pregnant women. The vote follows a successful test claim by PA, who challenged the detention she suffered when she was five months pregnant. Janet Farrell and Jane Ryan acted for PA.

As a result of PA’s shocking case the Home Office agreed to review its policy on detaining pregnant women.

Jane Ryan and Janet Farrell said: “This vote strikes a blow against the medical harm and indignity suffered by pregnant women in detention. We now look forward to MPs ending this terrible practice once and for all”.
