The Ministry of Justice has confirmed that the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO) will conduct an independent investigation into the use of restraints on pregnant women in custody.
Bhatt Murphy act for five pregnant women prisoners who were forced to attend antenatal examinations and undergo labour whilst restrained in handcuffs. The Government’s decision follows Bhatt Murphy writing to the Secretary of State for Justice calling for an independent investigation into the women’s inhumane and degrading treatment.
In his letter confirming the decision, the Minister for Prisons, Probation and Reducing Reoffending noted the “seriousness” and “deeply concerning” nature of the reports giving rise to the investigation.
Jane Ryan, partner at Bhatt Murphy said “This barbaric practice should never have happened on one occasion let alone across multiple prisons. My clients and all women affected should be at the heart of this investigation.”
Jane Ryan, Joanna Khan and Renata Sweeney act for the women affected and should be approached for any further comment or information on the case.
