Merseyside Police pay damages to Bhatt Murphy client arrested at golf tournament

Substantial damages recovered from Merseyside Police after man arrested for taking videos of a Just Stop Oil protest at Royal Liverpool Golf Course.

Our client LJ has recovered substantial damages from Merseyside Police after he was arrested for filming a Just Stop Oil protest on his mobile phone.

LJ was a ticket holder at the Open Golf Championship held at the course in July 2023. During the tournament, three individuals wearing ‘Just Stop Oil’ T-shirts carried out a protest on the putting green where our client was watching play.

LJ filmed the protest as it was taking place, and then filmed the activists being arrested and escorted across the site to police vehicles.

He was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to cause criminal damage despite there being no evidence to suggest that he was involved in the protest. LJ was detained at the police station for just under 24 hours during which time he was further arrested on suspicion of aggravated trespass.

Merseyside Police have offered no explanation for our client’s treatment and agreed to settle the case following receipt of his letter before claim.

LJ was represented by Joanna Khan.
