Met pay damages in another stop and search race claim

Nick and Leon Peart were detained and searched outside their home during the lockdown, having been targeted by police for a drugs search. They were handcuffed even though they offered no resistance. Nothing was found, even though police claimed to have seen drugs paraphernalia in Nick’s car.

Although the Met offered no admission of liability or apology, this case mirrors a seemingly unchanging statistical picture in London – young black men being 4 times more likely to be stopped and searched, and almost a quarter of all 15-24 year old black men being stopped and searched at the start of the lockdown.

Carolynn Gallwey of Bhatt Murphy acted for the brothers.
