Following a lengthy inquest in which they were exposed to distressing and difficult evidence, a Milton Keynes inquest jury has returned a highly detailed and exceptionally damning conclusion, finding that Brian Ringrose’s death amounted to manslaughter, and that neglect by both police and healthcare staff contributed to his death.
Brian Ringrose (24) died on 2 February 2021 following a prolonged prone restraint by Thames Valley Police officers at Milton Keynes Hospital. During much of this period, PC Martyn Jones was pulling his handcuffed arms backwards over his head, causing serious shoulder injuries. Healthcare staff had mistakenly informed police that Brian had been discharged into their custody, with neither police nor healthcare staff querying this even though Brian appeared semi-conscious and incapable of speech. The restraint was witnessed by multiple members of hospital staff including Brian’s assigned nurse and doctor. Not one of them intervened as he suffered cardio-respiratory failure in front of them.
