Court orders Home Secretary to pay £10k compensation to unaccompanied asylum seeking child

MR, was a child refugee from Afghanistan seeking family reunion with his uncle in the UK. The Home Secretary unlawfully refused his family reunion requests and he was required to take the Home Secretary to Court to enable his reunion with his family in the UK.

The Court found that he was a recently orphaned vulnerable child, suffering from mental health problems particularly during his time in Moira, a refugee camp in Greece. In a further judgment in March 2023, the child was awarded £10k compensation for breach of his Article 8 ECHR rights.
