The change in guidance follows extensive work by Bhatt Murphy with NGOs Birth Companions and Level Up in exposing the mistreatment of pregnant women and children in prison including the investigation into the death of baby Brooke Leigh Powell at HMP Styal (see here) and the Court of Appeal quashing the sentence of a pregnant woman (see here).
